To be alone in a crowd
Is the loneliest feeling,
Knowing you don’t belong
To the groups of friends
Chatting happily around you.
You move around quickly,
Masking an air of indifference
Pretending you don’t mind
Being in a crowd of strangers
Though it suffocates you.
You try not to make eye contact,
Only looking straight.
For you are determined
To get out of this place,
As soon as possible.
Sometimes it gets worse.
The crowd disperses
Into smaller groups,
And that wave of insecurity
Overcomes you.
The pieces of jigsaw puzzle
Connect together,
All except you,
A piece of driftwood,
Alone and exposed.
Whoever thought that
It was impossible to feel
Lonely among many people
Obviously didn’t consider
Whether or not
You actually know those people.
